Hi Wendy,

One would need to believe that the saint that is no longer living in this physical plane would be able to hear the prayers of those still alive on earth in order to intercede for them as Catholics believe.

Yes ,scripture identifies that criterion as necromancy ,only God knows the hearts of all men . The intersession of saints is limited to its "one" intercessor,in the authority of Jesus.

Saints that have left this realm under the Sun cannot help us in our infirmities for they have no way to know how to pray for what we ought ,they are not God and neither is their any daysman between us ,which of course would include saints that is no longer living in this physical plane .

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.Rom 8:26
